An opportunity currently exists for an Electrical or Civil Engineer or Technologist with RPT(Eng) designation in the Project Engineering team within AltaLink. Reporting to the Manager, Project Engineering, the successful candidate will work with internal & external technical staff to ensure that new transmission lines are appropriately integrated into capital projects. As such, this individual will provide technical leadership at all critical project phases -- from planning through to implementation and final acceptance.
This position will appeal to individuals with a utility Transmission Line Design background who are looking for an opportunity to develop their engineering and leadership talents in a dynamic utility environment.
Responsibilities
Under the supervision of the Manager, Project Engineering and the technical direction of the Principal Engineer, Transmission Lines, this individual will be accountable for the following:
- Provide timely and effective transmission line technical input into conceptual engineering, project scoping & estimating, and project execution.
- Provide technical direction and answer EPCM contractors’ questions to ensure each project meets acceptable standards for operability, functionality, maintainability, reliability, durability and safety.
- Develop project scope descriptions that provide sufficient detail to allow accurate estimating and clear direction to the Engineering contractor.
- Reviewing technical drawings & specifications to ensure each project meets acceptable standards for operability, functionality, maintainability, reliability, durability and safety.
- Assisting with the investigation and specification of new line material and equipment.
- Maintain effective working relationships with suppliers, partners and internal clients that result in growing understanding, good decisions and effective cooperation.
- Maintain competency with current industry standards and regulatory groups such as AECUC, CSA, IEC, IEEE, Industry Canada, AESO, WECC, and NERC.
- Take a leadership role in resolving technical issues pertaining to new transmission line facilities.
Qualifications
Minimum qualifications for this position are:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Civil or Electrical Engineering or Technologist Diploma in Civil or Electrical with RPT(Eng) status.
- Qualifies for registration as a Professional Engineer with the Association of Professional Engineers, Geologists and Geophysicists of Alberta (APEGGA).
- Minimum 3 years of transmission line design experience.
- Experience with (or at least a technical understanding of), the following:
- Transmission line components such as conductor types, insulators, structures (wood, steel, laminated, fiberglass), hardware, etc.
- Transmission line thermal analysis
- Transmission line construction practices.
- Transmission line operating and maintenance practices.
- Demonstrated ability to take a leadership role for resolving technical issues.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills with ability to work in a team environment, positively influence others, and develop strong internal and external relationships.
- Excellent analytical and risk assessment skills.
- Proven track record of producing innovative, productivity enhancing and forward thinking solutions.
- Strong written, reporting, graphical and oral presentation skills.
- Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage a wide variety of issues on multiple projects simultaneously.
- Comfortable working in a dynamic changing environment with multiple, occasionally conflicting, priorities.
Although it is not a requirement, preference will be given to individuals with knowledge & experience in the following:
- PLSCadd design software
- ESRI GIS database
- RateKit Thermal Analysis Program
Preference will be given to individuals who possess Transmission utility technical experience.
