      Manitoba Hydro has announced the first solar water heating system installation in the province through its Power Smart Solar Water Heating Program. The system was installed in a Power Smart Gold display home in Bridgewater Forest, the first neighbourhood of Waverley West.

      The installation is a joint initiative between Kensington Homes, the installer Northern Lights Solar Solutions, and Manitoba Hydro’s Power Smart New Home Program.

      Wind turbines appear so simple – tall white sentinels cranking gracefully on the horizon. But up close, a wind turbine is an industrial workhorse. Inside the nacelle hundreds of feet off the ground, hot metal gears grind and strain as shifting winds pull and twist the long flexible blades.

      At NREL, senior engineers are expanding a research partnership with operators, utilities and turbine manufacturers to determine why some key wind turbine components tend to wear out too soon – sometimes within a few years of installation.

      Nova Scotia Power today announced that it has signed an agreement to purchase development rights for a proposed wind farm located at Nuttby Mountain, 20 kilometres north of Truro. The proposed wind farm would have a maximum capacity of 45 megawatts and would produce enough energy to power approximately 15,000 homes.
